All of Ossies Surf Shop’s lessons are taught by local surfing legends whom hold current CPR and first aid cards. Ossies Surf Shop Owner Dan Hasselschwert has been surfing for14+ years and has given hundreds of surfing lessons. Dan is a licensed teacher in Oregon with a masters degree in curriculum and instruction. Dan started giving surf lessons to his middle school students in Waldport in the year 2000. Today, in addition to local 4H surfing clubs in Newport and Waldport, Dan started and still teaches the first college accredited surfing course in Oregon history at Oregon State University. This means that you can count on professional, quality instruction and positive results! Interested in tow-in surfing lessons? Dan has been towing 40ft. plus waves since 2004 and offering different levels of tow-in surfing lessons. Whether your a first time surfer looking to get into the sport or an experienced big wave rider looking to take your skills to the next level, Ossies surf shop will customize a surf lesson to meet your needs.

The legendary Paul Hanson gives the majority of our private surf lessons. Paul Hanson has been involved in counseling and teaching swimming, diving, rowing, surfing, and other sports since the 1970’s. An avid surfer himself, Paul has been appointed “The Mayor” of Otter Rock by the local surfers for his positive attitude, outgoing personality and community involvement. Surfing lessons are always fun when “Mayor” Hanson is around!

Ollie “The Real Deal” Richardson is a licensed teacher and Assistant Athletic Director at Newport High School. Ollie has been surfing for over 20 years and giving lessons for about 12+ years. Born and raised on the Oregon Coast, Ollie has a strong passion and love for the ocean and respects the forces of Mother Nature. He always brings his smile, enthusiasm and experience to all of his surf lessons. Ollie began tow-in surfing in 2004 and has ridden many monstrous days at Tackle Buster Reef (a.k.a. Nelscott); he and Ossie’s President Dan Hasselschwert recently earned sponsership from Ninsaki Brewing Company as well as Rebel Surfboards. Ollie & Dan are also tow surfing instructors. Ron “Gilman” Clifford has over 40 years of surfing a life long surfer and his stoke is contagious. Ron has taken over as head coach of the Waldport and Yachats 4H Surf Club. Ron has the experience and the personality to help anyone acheive their surfing goals. A true coach and mentor Ron has many surfing students who train with him weekly year round. If your looking to learn how to surf, a lesson with Ron is exactly what you need.

Jonny “Jedi” Knape was raised on the island of Kuaii, his dad, an avid surfer himself, moved young Jedi to Oregon in search of uncrowded surf. Jedi Johnny has been surfing his entire life and has a lot to teach about what beinging a surfer means on the mainland as well as the islands. Recently accused of being “HOT” and known locally as “kindofabigdeal”, if your looking for a fun lesson from a stoked out single guy who enjoys long walks on the beach, Jedi is your guy!
